Thankful on a Thursday

Wow, it's another Thursday already?  I feel like I just finish typing the last Thankful on a Thursday post.  I don't know about you, but time is flying by way to fast these days.  Is it the school year that sends things into high gear?  Whatever it is, the lazy days of Summer have sure ended for us.  We are staying super busy and home, work and church, but trying to enjoy every minute we can.

Photobucket

71. New Dresses. I wish I had pictures of them, because they are BEAUTIFUL! Mom found a black and white polka dot number for me in the most amazing fabric, and coordinating of course with our black and white theme of the rehearsal dinner. And the one for Claire is smocked with little pink flowers around the top and satin ribbons that tie on the shoulder as straps.

72. Our Childcare Situation (aka: Auntie Jessica).  I am so glad that things have worked out so Luke's sister Jessica can watch Claire while we are at work.  She is able to take Claire to the doctor, they go to the park and out to eat.  I'm so glad she is not spending all day with strangers but with family.  I don't tell her often enough how thankful I am for her!

73. Air conditioning.  I had to take Luke's car to work yesterday and it has no air conditioning.  It may be August, but in Alabama that means it's still 90+ degrees.  I'm thankful that he only has a five minute drive to and from work everyday and doesn't have to be in that hot car very long.  And I am thankful that the air in my car is like ice.

74. One week until Jay & Grace's Wedding.  Well really it's 10 days, but I am getting so excited.  I get to see all of our family and to see these two tie the knot.

Photobucket

75. That the Lord knows the wants and desires of our hearts before they leave our lips.  I feel like I have been so blessed with things that I wanted but never asked God for.  But His word ensures us that even unspoken prayers are answered.  Just little reminders that He is in control of our life and His holy and perfect will for us is greater than anything we can imagine.  That, I am truly thankful for.

And don't forget to link up with us!  Happy Thursday!

The Way God Speaks to Us

First of all, yes- God spoke to me.  Little old me.  And I don't think I have ever heard anything quite so clear.  Secondly, I do not tell this story to pat myself on the back, say "yeah me," or act like I am a perfect servant of Christ.  Because I am not.

With that said, here is my story of how God spoke to me last week.

It was Thursday after work, on my way home, which given my new schedule puts me about 2 miles from the house around 6:25pm.  I was talking to my friend Anna about a wedding shower I am helping some girls host for one of our sorority sisters, Melissa (who also happens to be one of my favorite peeps- and if she had a blog, I would totally link it here because it would be hil.ar.i.ous! But she doesn't, oh well).  I knew there was this meeting at my campus church from 6-8 called "Vision."

It was supposed to be for those people who had expressed interest in leading a small group for the Fall semester.  Someone had asked me to host a group of women at my house to clip coupons one night a week, nothing major.  I love pretending to be Betty Crocker and Sara Lee, so why not.  I agreed.  But the small group leader training would take place on Sunday mornings, and when I am not attending the worship service, I am serving in the Nursery/ Preschool.  So a Thursday night meeting really did fit my schedule best.

One more thing before I return to my story is that I drive by my campus church every day.  You can't really leave my house and go anywhere without passing it.  On the way to work.  On the way home.  Even to the grocery.  There it is.  Pass it all the time.  Nothing new here.

So I'm driving home, talking to my friend Anna, and started to think that I was too tired for the meeting... I could attend another night... It started at 6 and it was already 6:30... I didn't want to walk in late... No one would even know that I wasn't there.  Excuses, I know, but I was laying them out left and right.  And then I got closer to the church.  It was approaching on the right, and I planned to pass it right up.  Just like I do all the time.

But the Lord had different plans.  He spoke to me and told me not to pass it up.  Clear as day.  "Gini, don't pass up the church."  So, I pulled in the parking lot (still on the phone), sat there for a minute, then turned the ignition off, and walked inside.  I finally hung up the phone walking down the hall as I was deafened by the sound of what seemed like a hundred screaming kids.  I planned on passing them as well and heading into the auditorium, but somehow I ended up opening up the Nursery room door and asking the other ladies if they needed some help.

Do you ever drive somewhere, but then when you think back you can't really remember the ride over?  No, well at least humor me.  Because, really, that happens to me all.the.time.  Probably because I always have so much on my mind and I take driving time as a way to escape and talk to the Lord in prayer.  So anyway, that's how I felt.  Like I had arrived somewhere with no recollection of the journey.

But I have no doubt in my mind that it was God at work in my life.  He did not ever intend for me to attend the meeting.  His purpose for me not passing church and actually pulling into the parking lot was to serve Him... Allowing those parents to attend the meeting while their children were being cared for.  Those parents may make the choice to lead a small group this fall and help bring people to Christ.

I think that is why He spoke to me and told me to pull in the parking lot.  And I think it was Him who led me down the Nursery hallway and through the door.  His purpose for me was not to attend the meeting, but to serve Him so that others could.

Some people things things happen for a reason, but I believe things happen for His reason.

First Day of First Grade!

This was acutally last Monday, but we just got these pictures from her mom.  She loves her new class and her new teacher!  She is reading chapter books now, and we are just so proud of her.

Photobucket

I love the way she smiles and those adorable pigtails with her backpack on!

Photobucket

It's hard to believe she will be SEVEN this year... in just a few months actually.  Before we know it, Claire will be in first grade!  But I can't even think about that right now.

Hope you have a great weekend with people you love!

Thankful on a Thursday

It's a little later in the day than when I usually finish my Thursday post, but better late than never, huh?  There is truly so much to be thankful for, that I don't know where to begin.  Don't forget the code for your sidebar is on the left and the one for your post is below!  It makes me smile when I see these all over the interwebz.  I love all of you giving God the praise and glory He deserves for life's blessings!

66. Claire's Ultrasound Results.  We are so thankful for a good report from both the urologist and nephrologist.  It also helps to put things in perspective when you are a hospital made especially for sick children, that there are so many kids with horrible, life-changing diseases and conditions.  So as much as we hate this for Claire, overall, she is a healthy baby!

67. Mohawks at Bathtime. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, right?  I am just thankful that we are enjoying bathtime with Claire and not treating it as a chore, but more so as the delight it really is.
Photobucket

68. First Birthday Party Planning. I wish I could show you pictures of the wonderful fun I am having planning this first birthday! I am thankful that I'm not as stressed as I thought I would be, but instead really enjoying how this is bringing out my creative side. The cutting, gluing, painting, ribboning (yes, I just made up that word) and everything that goes along with it are making me smile- as long as I don't think about the fact that my baby is turning ONE!

69. Two Weeks Until Jay & Grace's Wedding.  I am getting so excited about gaining a sister-in-law as wonderful as Grace.  She and Jay are so perfect together, and I am thankful that they have found such a wonderful love in each other.

70. The AMAZING God I love and serve.  I haven't spent as much time in prayer as I would like to these past few days, and I can feel the enemy attacking.  But I love that I can go to the Lord in prayer and it's as if our conversation had never ended.

I have a meeting at church tonight, but I will do my best to read all of your Thankful on a Thursday posts tomorrow.  I truly enjoy each and every one!

God is the Ultimate Healer

So I took Claire to the pediatric urologist yesterday, and the results were awesome!  The ultrasound showed good functionality in both kidneys.  And while she is having trouble with only one, we were worried that this might cause the good kidney to be overworked and damaged, but that is not the case!

Now we wait three more months for another round of tests, but she will get to keep both kidneys for sure!  They haven't ruled out any "intervention," which is just a more pleasant word for "surgery."  While things would be alot better alot quicker if we did do a small surgery now, there is still a chance that the kidneys will heal themselves without it.  Since this is not painful to Claire in any way, Luke and I agreed to not do the surgery yet.

We thank you for all of the prayers you have said for Claire, and ask you to continue to pray for the doctors to have wisdom, for Luke and I to have peace, and of course for the miracle of ultimate healing that is only possible through Jesus Christ!  Happy Humpday!

My Version of Mommyhood

So, I'm not here today, but I'm guest blogging over at The Mommy Monologues.  Go visit Kate, and if you are not following her yet, shame on you.

My Version of Mommyhood

It’s definitely not how I played it out as a kid with my babydolls and their adorable baby clothes (and my matching mommy apron). There were plastic pots and pans, an iron, and the aforementioned babydolls- blonde like me, of course- in little wooden highchairs. My version of Mommyhood is probably not like anyone pictured it to be, because I definitely didn’t think this is what my life would look like.

Hi! I’m Gini and I tell tales of all things life over at The McGlothin Family Nest: love and marriage, our faith in the Lord and how it sustains us, babies and parenthood, balancing work and family and tons of pictures of our adorable girls. I emailed Kate a week or so ago and told her I really needed some inspiration. I was drawing a blank on what to write about. My blog is about my life, but what do I write about on someone else’s blog?

Well, Kate said I could still blog about my life, even though I’m in her house. So thanks, Kate for the hospitality. But where do I begin? Probably on the day I married my husband and best friend, Luke. He completes me in places I didn’t even know I was lacking. He is the most amazing partner to me and father to our girls that I could ever ask for. And speaking of our girls, one of them is not technically mine.

So yes, right from the beginning, my version of Mommyhood detours from white picket fences. When I married Luke, I also became a step-mother to the most beautiful angel, Bella. Only three years old at the time, Bella held my heart in the palm of her hand, and I learned that you really can love another person more than words can describe. And I also learned that the thought of losing that person can tear that heart in half. Bella’s mother got married six weeks after Bella was born and has moved her all over the country trying to keep Luke away from his sweet daughter. They’ve been in Jacksonville, Chicago, San Diego and are now in Hawaii. (While Luke and Bella’s mother were never married, he has been in her life since she was born.)
Then, as I learned that I was meant to be a mother, even if it was a step-mother, Bella’s step-father filed a motion in Probate Court to adopt her. Yes, the same place that handles the estates of dead people can decide if the father of a now four-year old girl will ever see her again. Luke and I don’t have lawyers. Long story short- his first lawyer agreed to something in court that Luke was whole-heartedly against- and from then on, Luke vowed to never let anyone else speak for him when it came to Bella.

So the two of us, with the support and prayers of our amazing families, went to court to fight for her (and I know you may think fight is a strong word not to be used when speaking about another human being, but it’s definitely what it felt like... the fight of our lives.) I testified, Luke cross-examined, her mother and step-father said Bella would be better off without us in her life, but the judge decided that Bella’s step-father could not adopt her. Bella had a father that was more than willing to provide for her and desired to be a prominent fixture in her life. Score. We thought we were done.

Nope, they appealed the decision to the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals, so we spent the next summer filing briefs and motions and never even allowing ourselves to think the verdict may be reversed. Again, the appellate court ruled in our favor. Bella had a father and she could not be adopted by another man. So, now we’re done, right? Now I can focus on our family and possibly even adding to it? Now I can stop having nightmares that we will never see Bella again?

Wrong again. They again appealed the decision, this time to the Supreme Court of Alabama citing the Probate Court exercised judicial misconduct when it ruled Bella’s father should not be eliminated from her life. I know it sounds ridiculous, but they maintained the argument that if we truly loved Bella, we would let her go. And they did all of this knowing that there was no way that was ever going to happen. Luke and I were never going to give up. Never.
And if this wasn’t enough, they told us they were moving to Hawaii. Bella’s step-father is in the Navy and his orders required they be stationed at Pearl Harbor. (We would later learn in court that they had requested to move there.) So if the courts wouldn’t take Bella away from Luke, they were determined to put 5,000 miles between father and daughter. We filed a motion to prevent this move, but the court actually had other advice for us. The judge was infuriated to learn that her step-father had attempted to circumvent the family court’s order by trying to adopt Bella in Probate Court and now they were taking her half-way around the world. He told Luke to file for custody of Bella.

What? Fathers almost never get custody of a child when the mother isn’t dead or in prison. But we thought if the judge told us to file for custody of Bella, then we might actually have a chance. And while we would love to have Bella with us full-time, our motion for custody was joint. We didn’t want to take Bella away from her mother like she had taken her away from us. We just wanted to see her more than a few weeks a year and to stop spending about that much time travelling back and forth to bring her here and then home again.
But we also decided this would no longer prevent us from growing our family. The two of us lived more than ten months a year without children, and we knew we wanted more. It’s not that Bella wasn’t enough, but we always knew we would have more children and we shouldn’t wait any longer. So we ditched the pill (or as my friends say- “removed the goalie”) and the next month we were expecting.

I got lucky that the morning sickness was gone by the time Bella arrived for her Summer 2009 visit. I had also recently been laid off, so while no one was hiring (and especially hiring pregnant ladies) I spent the six weeks at home with my angel. Bella rubbed my belly constantly, talking to the baby and tell her all of things she would teach her one day. It was a great bonding experience and an awesome way to involve Bella in our growing family.

After three delays by Bella’s mother, we finally headed into our custody trial just one week before Claire was to be born. But the judge seemed to forget how angry he was ten months earlier at their outrageous attempts to take Bella away from us. He seemed to think we couldn’t work together well enough to sustain joint custody. And he denied the very thing he told us to file for. It was heartbreaking, but we have full faith in God’s plan for us and for Bella.

On the brighter side, the Supreme Court of Alabama didn’t even agree to hear the adoption case, much less reverse the decision. But now Bella will know that her mother and step-father spent over two and half years trying to eliminate us from her life, and that makes me sad. We want to think the best of our parents, and I don’t look forward to the day she learns this. And I can guarantee it won’t be from us. It’s too hard, it hurts too bad and it wouldn’t do anybody any good.

We have accepted the time we get to share as a family of four, and Bella is adjusting to Claire very well. She loves taking a bath with her, reading to her and playing peek-a-boo. While my version of mommyhood is nothing like I pictured it would be, I wouldn’t change it for anything.

You can find out more about us over at The McGlothin Family Nest, and we hope you’ll fly by! Thanks again for your hospitality Kate. The tea and scones were delightful.

Thankful on a Thursday for Fat Kids

This week is all about my Fat Kids.  They are my group of friends from high school that are still friends ten years later.  We still get together for every wedding and every bab and every.single.Christmas.  We don't miss.  Not even one.  It's the guarunteed single night of the year that I can catch up with some of the women that still mean the most to me.

Yes, there are other things to be be thankful for, but I have these great pictures that Christine took at Holly's shower, and I can't help but share them in the process of telling you how much I love the Fat Kids.

61. My Girls.  We have been through a lot together, as if the stressful high school years weren't enough, and we've stayed close.  These girls stood beside when I got married, when I was big and pregnant with Claire, and I can't wait to see what else the future has in store for us.
Photobucket

62. Claire's Girls.  I am so glad that Christine, Holly and I are all blessed with girls so that they can continue our great friendship.  And Christine was an invaluable resource to me since Laynie is about eight months older than Claire.  She's talked me through teething, first foods, car seats and a lot more.
Photobucket

63. Good Times.  This is Holly's beautiful diaper cake, and the one they made for me was just as awesome.  And not only was it pretty, I went quite some time before having to buy any diapers!
Photobucket

64. Even Mom joins in on the fun.  She's always so hospitable and loves for the girls to come over.  Only thing is, she can't hang with us and heads to bed long before the last glass of wine has been poured.  We love you mom!  I am so thankful to have grown up with these girls and their moms as well.
Photobucket

65.  Good Friendships.  I am so glad to have these girls in my life, and I actually can't imagine my life without them.

And I was really late in commenting last week, but I promise to try and do better.  So link up here and I can't wait to read your always beautiful and inspiring Thankful on a Thursday posts.

Ten Months

Aaaahhhhhhhh!!!!  Ten months?!?  Already?!?  I'm not ready for this.  I'm not ready for walking, for the first birthday party (which I am very behind in planning), and I feel like she'll be asking me to shave her legs next week.

But time doesn't seem to listen to me and continues to move at the speed of a jet plane.  And ten months is here.  So, I guess I need to embrace it and get ready for

Things she loves:
* The girl is all about some french fries.
* Goldfish.  Since my mom gave her some in the mountains last month, she reaches for everything small and orange thinking it might be goldfish.
* The library... Thanks to her Auntie Jessica and cousin Camille, Claire doesn't have to sit at home all day every day, and gets to go on lots of outings, like the library.
* Swimming.  We had so many fun days at Alabama Adventure with Bella this Summer and Claire was loving all the time in the water.  As a former swim lesson instructor, I am slightly excited for the day she can swim without that pesky life jacket.
* Oh, and one things she hates?  Bows.  It was quite rare that she kept this one on for most of Holly's shower.

Photobucket

Things she is amazing me with:
* Saying "bye-bye" with her cute little wave and stunning blue eyes makes it hard to leave her in the morning.
* Saying "Bella" to her sissy on the phone, makes me smile from ear to ear.
* Just saying more and more words every day.
* Her eight little teeth make her look like a little person and not like a baby anymore, and as sad as that is, sweet smile is truly amazing!

Family and Fat Kids and Babies Galore!

Claire and I had an awesome weekend!  We flew to New Orleans after work Friday (although my shoe broke and I had to email my entire company in search for superglue to put them back together!) and while we were a wee bit delayed, Claire had a great flight.  Honey and Pop picked us up and we headed home for some good times.

Kristen came over and Christine brought her sweet Laynie bug, who is only eight months older than Claire.  We had a few glasses of wines with a lot of catching up and a lot of laughs.  Saturday morning, mom and I had manicures, pedicures and massages (yes, I know I am spoiled) while dad kept Claire.  After a little playtime and some lunch, mom and I headed back out for some shopping (even more evidence I am spoiled).  We picked up a dress for Claire for Jay and Grace's and a few things for the Rehearsal Dinner.

Mr. Jerry and Mrs. Brenda came over for drinks before we all went out to dinner at Vincent's (my absolute favorite place in New Orleans).  I had a bowl of corn & crab bisque soup with seafood ravioli and broccoli.  I always get stuffed on the bread sticks- I think Claire will take after me on this because she went through at least a couple- but this time I restrained myself and actually had enough room to finish my wonderful meal.

Sunday was Holly's baby shower, and let me tell you, it was a.maz.ing.  Like the centerpieces at the bad boy were nicer than the ones I had at my wedding.  I'm sad I didn't get any more pictures this weekend, but I'm sure Christine with her awesome camera (that I am oh so jealous of) got plenty.  Hopefully she'll share with me, and therefore share with you.

It was sad leaving again, but we had another great plane ride home last night, and even made a new friend.  She actually lives close to us and works in the same industry as Luke.  Hopefully we'll find each other on Facebook.  (On a side note: How did we live before social networking?)  She sat next to Claire and I on the way down and she found us again on the plane ride back!  Yesterday, the flight wasn't full, so Claire sat in between us and made quite the mess.

Photobucket
I cleaned up as best as I could (after taking a picture of course) and tried to apologize to the flight attendant but she just gave me the sided eye. Obviously she doesn't have kids.  But at least Claire looked adorable while making a mess.

And as always, coming home from a vacation just makes you feel like you need a vacation even more.  So it's back to work.  Hopefully, I'll find some more time to breathe and when I do I'll try to squeeze in a wee more blogging here and there.  Thanks for sticking it out with us!

Surprise Flight!

I hope my Fat Kid friends don't read this (and I'll write a post about how we got that name- it's what we call each other fondly) because I am going home to New Orleans to visit them today!

One of our Fat Kids is Holly- also affectionately known as Hurl- is knocked up with little Savannah and is having her baby shower in NOLA this weekend.  I looked at the flights and they were too expensive.  Luke had something to do and I didn't want to drive with Claire by myself, so I chalked it up as something I would miss as a consequence of moving far away after high school.

That was until my mom had a Skype session with Claire last weekend and decided she wanted to see her in person (it's no longer about me, it's all about the baby now, and I have come to accept that) so she bought me- since Claire can't fly by herself quite yet- a ticket to fly home this weekend!

So off we go!  I'm sure I'll have lots of pictures to share after this fun weekend- which will also be crammed with trying to help mom and dad get ready for my brother's wedding which is in ONE MONTH!  We are T-Minus four weeks until Jay and Grace tie the knot.  Lots and lots to do, but I am starting it off with drinks by the pool with good friends tonight!

Happy Friday and enjoy the weekend with people you love!

The Return of Thankful on a Thursday

So it took a while for us to regain our footing, but we're back.  I have so many pictures and stories to share, I don't even know where to begin.  And we have oh so much to be thankful for, so we'll start with Matt & Kendall's wedding....

Photobucket

56. Mani/Pedis with my Bella Bug.  We had so much fun, and she picked out some beautiful colors!  The blue for her toes and silver for her nails.  She picked gold for my toes and a peachy-pink for my nails.  Not exactly my taste, but she was so happy that I went along with her selections for the "party," which sounded more funt o her than "wedding."

Photobucket

57. A Good Family Picture.  We really don't get these often enough.  But here we are- all dressed up and all together.

Photobucket

58. Matching Barrettes.  Bella's new dress had a flower with a rhinestone flower

Photobucket

59. Lots of Dancing.  As you can tell, we all had a great time.  McGlothins may have two left feet, but at least we have fun doing it.

Photobucket

60. Sweet Sisters. I wish I had more pictures of the sisters together because they are so darn cute!

Photobucket

I know all of these pictures are from the same night, but I'm trying to space out my Bella pics to last me a while longer.  Maybe not five months longer, but at least a little longer.  She is flying with her mother today back to Hawaii so please pray for safe travels.

And don't forget to link up with us!  Happy Thursday!

Reason #905,741,826 I Love My Husband

He knows when the chef in me (or at least the one I pretend to be there) needs a break.  And he grills a steak, makes rice and veggies and pours me a glass of red wine.

Photobucket

He's no Curtis Stone or Jamie Oliver, but he is mine and I love him so very much!
